Ants
Ants are frequently-seen insects in our lives. There are many kinds of them. There are more than 11,700 ant species known in the world. Ant is a typical social group animal with a clear division of work between individuals. They can cooperate with each other, and their offspring can take care of the older generation for a period of time, which is similar to human society. Ants are also comparable to humans in terms of architectural design. The ant nests they build have rooms with many different uses: those for storing food and those for sleeping. Room storing food is ventilated, cool, warm in winter and cool in summer, and food is not easy to spoil. Ants have a long life span. Worker ants can live for several weeks to several years, while queen ants can live for several years or even ten years. Based on the variety of ants, they are classified as carnivorous ants, vegetarian ants and omnivorous ants. Ants often invade human home to look for food and build nests. Ants can contaminate food, destroy buildings, spread bacteria, and bite human bodies. In humid climate areas, there is a kind of white ant(named as termite) that can gather in wooden houses, bite wood for a long time, and can destroy houses seriously. In North America, Europe and South Asia, there is a small pharaoh ant with a body of 2mm long, yellow or light brown, almost transparent. They can eat a variety of foods, including fats, sugary foods and dead insects. They can also make holes in silk, rayon and rubber products. They are usually found in crevices of walls, under floors or in various types of furniture. The nest may be small, making detection more difficult. See Pharaoh ant picture below.
Control of Ants
1. Physical method. If one or more rows of ants are found moving, they can be wiped off with a wet cloth and placed in a basin filled with detergent water. As the ants will drown once they enter the detergent water, the detergent water can be used to protect a certain area. The ants in the driveway can be directly killed with hot water.
2. Buy ant sprays or powders available in stores to kill ants. You can spray them directly to ants.
3. Buy ant trap available in stores and place it in a place where ants frequent.
The above methods have good results, especially the chemical methods are effective quickly, but these methods are not easy to eradicate ants. The chemical methods can cause environmental pollution and pesticide resistance. Note that the above chemical methods are not applicable to Pharaoh ants. For pharaoh ants, we recommend to use special bait that is attractive to them. That special bait is used as an active substance. Pharaoh ants are attracted by the bait and then brought back to the nest. Within a few weeks, the production of worker ants can be prevented and the queen can be disinfected. Thereby the entire nest of pharaoh ants will be destroyed.
